Bacteriostatic Water is a sterile, nonpyrogenic water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a bacteriostatic preservative to inhibit bacterial growth without eliminating existing microbes. It is employed in laboratory settings for reconstituting peptides, proteins, or other research compounds, ensuring solution stability and sterility during in vitro experiments or non-clinical studies by qualified researchers.
Mechanism of action
Bacteriostatic water is sterile water + 0.9% benzyl alcohol. The alcohol disrupts bacterial cell membranes, inhibiting reproduction (bacteriostatic effect) without killing existing microbes, allowing multi-dose use.
Lyophilized: −20°C, stable 24 months. Post-reconstitution: 4°C, use within 30 days. Protect from light.
Add 1–2 mL bacteriostatic water slowly along the vial wall. Gently swirl — do not shake. Allow 5–10 min for complete dissolution.
